I’ve been coming to Orvieto off and on for a couple of decades. \u00a0I’m living here,\u00a0now — at least until the middle of May, and am hoping to become a more permanent resident by and by; we shall see how life treats that intention. \u00a0In the meantime, as I gradually learn the language and customs, as new people introduce\u00a0themselves, and as old towns invite me to explore, I will endeavor\u00a0to share the contours of it all with you.<\/p>\n

\"\"This is an outsider’s view of life in Orvieto from one who is trying to live it from the inside. \u00a0From the inside of Orvieto, certainly, also from the inside of the culture, the traditions, and most importantly, from the inside of experience. \u00a0It ain’t easy. \u00a0But it’s all so rewarding.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It also “ain’t\u00a0easy” to avoid generalization, but I mean\u00a0to\u00a0try. \u00a0Outsiders\u00a0and Italians alike have always loved to comment on the\u00a0Italian character and personality. \u00a0Much of that\u00a0is beautiful and true. \u00a0Some is self-perpetuating myth. \u00a0Being here as an active observer is an ongoing process of sorting that out. \u00a0I hope my efforts are fruitful, and perpetuate as few false impressions of this wonderful culture as possible.<\/p>\n

I must say the same about other cultures I have enjoyed,\u00a0also referenced here. \u00a0Culture, by its very nature, invites easy, lazy, stereotyping. \u00a0Forgive me when I fall into that trap about Italy, the States, historical periods, or anything else. \u00a0It’s\u00a0a\u00a0fine line that divides romance from life, and to make finding the distinction even more challenging, sometimes it’s best not to look for a division\u00a0at all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Wherever we go from here, it’s lovely having friends along for the journey. \u00a0I’ve not opened a comments section (or at least I’ve tried not to, WordPress seems quirky that way) because I barely have time for the posts, and don’t want my life during\u00a0these months in Orvieto that remain\u00a0to be engulfed in blog maintenance. \u00a0If you have a response, I would love to hear about it via\u00a0Facebook where all these posts are shared, or write me an email.<\/p>\n
